General Statement of Job:
Under regular supervision, performs skilled work in operating vehicles as necessary transport clients and/or meals to various locations on established routes. Work involves delivering meals to homebound senior citizens; transporting senior citizens to designated locations; and keeping the building and/or grounds maintained. Reports to the Program Coordinator.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities (This is descriptive, not restrictive as to all tasks included in this position):
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Vehicle Operator I’s perform a variety of work according to assigned work and/or supervisor. Duties may include the following: Performs inspection of the van daily to ensure the safety of the passengers and in working condition. Transports senior citizens to and from assigned locations per designated routes following established safety policies and procedures. Provides assistance to senior citizens on and off the van. Delivers commodities and meals to senior citizens. Checks the building to ensure preparation and readiness for the day; appoints coworkers to assist in ensuring the building is clean, coffee is made, the building is vacuumed, etc.; ensures the availability of needed supplies. Cleans refrigerators, stoves, cabinets, closets, chairs, windows, walls, etc.; empties trashcans; waters plants, sweeps and mops the building. Sets up for activities when needed. Performs general groundskeeping such as picking up trash, raking leaves, picking up tree limbs, etc. Receives and/or reviews various records and reports such as transportation report sheets, office memorandums, daily report, maintenance order, supply list, information on senior citizens, count for meals, etc. Prepares and/or processes various records and reports such as pre-trip inspection list, commodity list, daily log, leave request, telephone message, weekly report, maintenance list, etc. Refers to daily log list, maps, safety manuals, policy handbook, route sheets, forms for vans, memorandums, policy and procedure manuals, codes / laws / regulations, publications and reference texts, etc. Operates a variety of vehicles, equipment, and machinery such as City van, weed eater, blower, buffer, copy machine, fax machine, etc. Uses a variety of tools such as vacuum cleaner, screwdriver, hammer, mop, broom, etc.; a variety of supplies such as bleach, air freshener, disinfectant, glass cleaner, furniture polish, soap, paper towels, general office supplies, etc. Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Program Coordinator, Assistant Coordinator, senior citizens and their families, coworkers, Food Bank, Jefferson Council on Aging, and the general public. ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS Provides backup support when coworkers are unavailable. Distributes commodities to designated place inside the building and to seniors’ homes. Provides assistance when needed such as calling Bingo, setting up and breaking down activities and meeting rooms, replacing light bulbs, moving and sanitizing tables and chairs, answering telephone, painting, etc. Performs other related duties as required.

Communication Skills:
Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisors.

Physical Requirements:
Must be physically able to operate van and a variety of gardening and lawn maintenance tools. Must be able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Medium Work. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of ten to eighty pounds.

Mental Involvement:
Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in or from standardized situations.

Minimum Training and Experience Qualifications:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent with nine to twelve months of community vehicle experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess a valid Louisiana State Class “D” Driver’s License.

Interpersonal Relationship Skills:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent with nine to twelve months of community vehicle experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess a valid Louisiana State Class “D” Driver’s License.

Test Required:
NON-COMPETITIVE - ALL ACCETABLE CANDIDATES WILL BE FORWARDED TO THE DEPARTMENT WITH THE VACANCY.

Salary Requirements:
$10.3957 PER HOUR / 20 HOURS PER WEEK
