General Statement of Job:
Under regular supervision, performs various entry-level and manual maintenance duties required in support of the department. Work involves cleaning and repairing drains; flushing out drains; mixing cement; weed eating drains and culverts; performing asphalt work; and operating assigned equipment. Reports to the Foreman.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities (This is descriptive, not restrictive as to all tasks included in this position):
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Construction Worker Iís perform a variety of work according to assigned work and/or supervisor. Duties may include the following: Cleans ditches. Lays tack; shovels, rakes, and/or rolls asphalt. Lays pipes for drainage. Levels grounds. Operates dump truck. Removes debris and trash from drains and grounds. Responds to citizensí calls. Ensures all tools necessary for the job are available. Installs and repairs sprinkler systems. Maintains gardens and palm trees. Maintains journals. Receives and/or reviews various records and reports such as work orders, calls on the radio, and job locations. Prepares and/or processes various records and report such as vehicle sign in / out, maintenance checklist, work orders, equipment needed, and materials list. Refers to schedule, maps / directions, Foremanís knowledge, policy and procedure manuals, codes / laws / regulations, publications and reference texts, etc. Operates a variety of vehicles, equipment, and machinery such as roller, backhoe, jackhammer, pick up truck, weed eater, hedge trimmer, chainsaw, blower, etc. Uses a variety of tools such as shovel, rake, cones / signs, hammer, broom, pipe cutter, etc.; and a variety of supplies such as cement, asphalt, sand, tack, dirt, pipes, glue, primer, weed eater parts, weed killer, etc. Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Foreman, Equipment Operator, Truck Driver, coworkers, and the general public. ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS Provides assistance with other divisions and departments. Performs other related duties as required. Essential duty status position, will be required to report to work during emergency situations, including, but not limited to, city-wide declared emergencies.

Communication Skills:
Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisors.

Physical Requirements:
Must be physically able to operate a residential truck, shovel, pitchfork, hydraulic system, etc. Must be able to exert in excess of one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of fifty pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of twenty pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of ten to fifty pounds.

Mental Involvement:
Requires the ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.

Minimum Training and Experience Qualifications:
Requires nine to twelve months of public works construction/parkways operation experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess a current, valid Louisiana's license - Class D or better.

Interpersonal Relationship Skills:
Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. The worker needs to relate to people in situations involving more than giving or receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress when confronted with an emergency.

Test Required:
NON-COMPETITIVE - All candidates who meet the minimum qualification requirements for this class of work are eligible for appointment.

Salary Requirements:
$10.3957 PER HOUR / 40 HOURS PER WEEK
