General Statement of Job:
Under general supervision, performs technical work in inspecting vehicles for the City of Kenner enforcing compliance to vehicle codes. Reports to the Manager.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities (This is descriptive, not restrictive as to all tasks included in this position):
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Meets and greets customers in a professional manner. Verifies the vehicle is registered in the City of Kenner, has current insurance, and the driver has a current license; notifies the driver if inspection cannot be completed due to invalid documents. Notes if the prior inspection sticker is current or overdue. Inspects the vehicle according to established policies and procedures to ensure meeting State law requirements. Notifies the driver if the vehicle has passed; collects the fee for passing; explains the reason(s) if it did not meet requirements. Writes the results of findings. Presents the inspection results and money to the Assistant Manager; obtains new sticker and changes; provides a receipt and copy of the inspection; removes old sticker; applies new sticker. Provides the driver with a copy of the inspection report if the vehicle did not meet requirements; advises corrections needed to be made and time limitation to return for re-inspection; removes the old sticker from the vehicle. May work as a cashier as needed. Receives and/or reviews various records and reports such as driver’s license, registration paper, proof of insurance, etc. Prepares and/or processes various records and reports such as inspection registration, hold harmless form, vehicle inspection form, etc. Refers to Louisiana Department of Public Safety - Motor Vehicle Inspection booklet, Louisiana Vehicle Inspection Manual, Kenner Directives Relevant to Vehicle Inspections, policy and procedure manuals, computer manuals, codes / laws / regulations, publications and reference texts, etc. Operates a variety of vehicles, equipment and machinery such as pick up truck, jump box, etc. Uses a variety of tools such as razor blades, slide ruler, batteries, scrapper, window tint meters, etc.; and a variety of supplies such as writing instruments, inspection forms, tire gauge, general office supplies, etc. Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Manager, Assistant Manger, coworkers, vendors, and the general public. ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS May provide backup assistance for the Manager and Assistant Manager when needed. Performs other related duties as required.

Communication Skills:
Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes the receiving of information and instructions from supervisor.

Physical Requirements:
Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle and various inspection instruments, etc. Must be physically able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work. Work involves frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, and balancing. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of approximately twenty pounds.

Mental Involvement:
Has the ability to apply rational systems such as building construction and inspections, etc. in order to solve problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.

Minimum Training and Experience Qualifications:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent with one to two years experience in inspections OR work experience in customer service/interacting with the public. Must possess a valid Louisiana driver’s license.

Interpersonal Relationship Skills:
Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress when confronted with an emergency.

Test Required:
The examination may consist of a written test, and/or a rating of training and experience. If used, the rating of training and experience will be based on information on file with the Civil Service Department. Thus, applicants must furnish a complete and accurate detailed description of their work experience, the names and addresses of all previous employers, the dates of employment, and a photocopy of their high school (or equivalency diploma).

Salary Requirements:
$9.5851 PER HOUR / 35 HOURS PER WEEK
